Experiment with rules, stories and real-world problems. About 20–35 minutes per activity; adjust for attention and access needs.
What to encourage at this age
Invite a first plan, one revision and a short explanation of what changed.
Safety and suitability: Supervise cutting and any glue or pointed tools. No phone or computer is needed for these activities.
01
Drawing + invention
Invent a helpful creature
Prepare: Paper, pencil, colouring materials.
Try it: Pick a problem such as carrying heavy schoolbooks. Sketch a creature that could help, label its useful features and improve one part after feedback.
Reflect: Ask: Which feature solves the problem?
Skills practised: Empathy, iterative design.
School connection: Science: how body structures serve functions.
02
Digital design without a device
Paper interface for a school app
Prepare: Paper, sticky notes, markers.
Try it: Draw three screens for a pretend library app: home, search and borrowed books. Ask a friend to follow your paper buttons and revise any confusing steps.
Reflect: Ask: Can someone use it without explanation?
Skills practised: Visual hierarchy, user perspective.
School connection: Language: clear instructions; maths: classification.
03
Unplugged coding
Living-room algorithm
Prepare: Arrow cards, paper grid, toy.
Try it: Create a grid, set a start and finish, then write arrow instructions to navigate. Exchange instructions and debug incorrect moves.
Reflect: Ask: Which command needs changing?
Skills practised: Sequencing and debugging.
School connection: Math: directions and spatial reasoning.
04
Animation
Motion on eight paper frames
Prepare: Eight small papers, clip.
Try it: Draw a ball moving a little between numbered frames. Flip them to observe movement; revise where the ball jumps too far.
Invite the child to show what they made, describe one decision, and suggest one change for next time. Avoid ranking children by how polished their pictures look.
